JLG: Project Architect/Manager

Location:         Sioux Falls, SD

FLSA Status:   Exempt, Salaried

You’re so creative, people cheer with every pencil stroke.  You’re such a great communicator, you carry a microphone.  Your clients love you so much they take you on vacation.  You thrive on detail, you crush deadlines, and you’re such a great multi-tasker that you’re reading this while tuning up your motorcycle.

You want to lead, and reap the profits of your efforts, and work with some of the most creative, fun and progressive people in our industry, and eat chocolate-covered potato chips.  Guess what?  We have the job for you.

JLG Architects is seeking a Project Architect/Manager.  Not just any Project Architect/Manager, mind you.  A JLG Project Architect/Manager:

-        Is the backbone, the brain and the heart of a project.  A JLG PA/M coordinates the entire project team, leads internal and external meetings, is the day-to-day contact for the client and keeps the budget and schedule online.

-        Knows his or her stuff.  Engineering?  Check.  Construction?  Check.  Codes, materials, latest design trends?  Check, check, check.

-        Delivers. Speaking of checks, a JLG PA/M is responsible for the execution of the JLG Project Checklist, our tried-and-true standards and processes guidelines.

A few more attributes of a future JLG-er:

-        Clients trust you.  You have a history of client sponsorship and management, as well as a proven track record of turning those relationships into built work.

-        You need to be an experienced designer.  You must be a registered architect with a minimum 5 years of post-graduate experience.  If your resume includes award-winning projects, even better.

-        You know what it means to be a leader.  Your “can-do” outlook and willingness to do what it takes garners the respect and confidence of your peers and project team.  You stick to your budgets and schedules, period.  You communicate.  “Organized” is your middle name.

-        You must understand technology.  You need to be proficient in both Revit and AutoCad, and proficient in building technology.

-        You are ready to apply.  Visit www.jlgarchitects.com/careers and suit up for the first day of the rest of your life.

About JLG:

At JLG, we design for life.  We know that it takes more than just bricks and mortar to build a community.  It takes passionate local stewardship, progressive leaders, and designers who understand how to turn a small idea into a big future.  For over 27 years, our 100 JLGers have raised the bar on what is expected from architecture in North Dakota, Minnesota and South Dakota so that we can continuously improve the quality of life of our clients, our neighbors, and our families, while remaining dedicated to our clients’ bottom lines, today, tomorrow and for the next generation to come.  We are inspired by the future, and work passionately to make our impact go beyond a building.  As a result, JLG has been identified as one of the hottest architecture firms in the United States by Inc., Architectural Record, the Zweig Group, and the Minneapolis-St. Paul Business Journal and is a “Best Place to Work” according to Prairie Business magazine, the Zweig Group, GGF Young Professionals and the National American Institute of Architects Intern Development Program.

JLG lives and breathes design excellence; it counts – at every level and for every position.  We balance innovative design with borderline-obsessive budget control to generate solutions that are as creative as they are practical. Function is the baseline; form is what lifts up the spirit; and innovation elevates the experience for our clients, their visitors, and the region as a whole.  JLG has over 100 design awards in our portfolio because we are committed to elevating expectations for our clients and our communities.

More importantly, our employees are what make us JLG. They are the brains behind our award-winning designs, the heart of our corporate family, and the reason we have been named a Best Place to Work firm, both for professionals and early career adults.

They are also are owners.  At JLG, At JLG, we have approached the design of our company the same way we approach architecture – to stand the test of time. By transferring ownership of our organization to our employees, we have made manifest a deep-seated value, that what we do is more than just “a job”. It’s about building a stable and enduring company that will draw and retain really great people who will actively contribute to the long-term success of the communities we serve.  In January 2015, JLG turned over the keys to the company.  We are now governed by an 100% Employee Stock Ownership Plan, or ESOP.  Every full-time employee is eligible to participate without any cost incurred.

Every day at JLG is a new day for creating, inspiring and solving challenges.  Everyone – from our Intern Designers to our Construction Administrator to our Marketing staff – is a part of the process, and we work closely together because we are inspired by one another.  So, if you are someone with fire in your belly and fun up your sleeve, you’re someone we want to meet.

The South Dakota State University Department of Architecture (SDSU DoArch) invites applications for two full-time instructor positions (non-tenure track) to begin August 2016. Responsibilities include teaching courses within the professional and pre-professional curriculum and serving the department. Teaching responsibilities will include studio instruction, lecture and seminar courses, and in our unique workshop sequence.  Our faculty are practice savvy, self-motivated colleagues with academic minds.  This is a small, nimble, and new department with room in the curriculum to shape particular inquires about the discipline and the profession.  SDSU actively seeks to increase social and intellectual diversity among its faculty and staff. Women and persons underrepresented in higher education are encouraged to apply.

SDSU is a thriving 130 year old land-grant university with a focus on science and the humanities in a “hands-on” culture that emphasizes “learning by doing”.  Located in Brookings, a nurturing and charming college town north of Sioux Falls and west of Minneapolis, SDSU is set in a rich fabric of small cities eager to embrace innovative and smart design practices.

In 2010, DoArch was launched as the first new architecture program on the Great Plains in a century.  In its first six years the department has established a notable record of engaging regional towns, institutions, and cities as ready and untapped urban laboratories.  In 2015, programs in interior design, landscape architecture, graphic design, architecture, and studio arts were brought together to form a new School of Design (SoD) and DoArch moved into a new building with offices, design studios and a 13,000sf workshop outfitted with state of the art manual and CNC fabrication, construction, and manufacturing tools.

DoArch has a unique mandate to remain a small program of no more than 220.  DoArch has already grown to 140 students and 6 faculty. The department offers an NAAB professional accreditation candidate Master of Architecture (M-Arch) degree and a pre-professional 4 year Bachelor of Fine Arts in Architecture (BFA-Arch) degree.  Students matriculate through the M-Arch degree on both a first architecture degree 3+ year path and in a 4+2 formatted path. The professional program looks forward to its final NAAB candidacy visit in Fall 2016 and intends to hold full accreditation in 2017.
